United we Stand - A call to Shantae-Fans (Rant!) by Paragon-Yoshi United we Stand - A call to Shantae-Fans (Rant!) by Paragon-Yoshi
'Don't wait for a miracle. Be the miracle!'

Another drawing finished.
And this time, with an important message.
Originally, I wanted to add some words there as well.
But I have bad handwriting and it just ended up looking messy, so I left the handwriting out.

What is this drawing about?
You can see Shantae down there, half-asleep in the depths of oblivion.
But her fans are fighting for her and help her rise from the shadows and go to the light.
The hands represent the fans the potential powers they can develop.

And with this, we're right on the topic...
Before I start with the actual rant, I might as point out that this rant is kind of a follow-up of a journal entry I wrote some time ago,
The link: [link]

If you haven't read it already, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you to do it!

I love Shantae. The games are just wonderful.
And like I said in the journal, I think it's almost a crime that it was punished with low attention and rejection from other companies.
And it just cannot be true that developers who put all their heart into such a wonderful game are punished, while OTHER COMPANIES I COULD MENTION (*cough* C[r]apcom *cough*) do a half-arsed/lazy job and are successful with it.
That just ain't right.

So I am trying all I can in order to do something about it.
To help Shantae get the attention and success she deserves.
Though I am just one man and I can only do so much.

But in an entire fan-community, that is solidary, sticks together and fights as one, we could move mountains.

I know many people say we cannot do anything.
But I think it's a load of bull. And it's because of this pessimistic viewpoint that fan-efforts end up failing in some cases.
However, if fans would at least try, they'd see for themselves that they are not as powerless as they thought they were.

Which is why I IMPLORE every Shantae-fan who might read this...!
Please join in this fight for great justice. Do everything in your power to help Shantae.
And if we do it all together, we can really make a difference.
I know we can! :)

Now what can you do in order to help?
Well, there are many ways.

The easiest and simplest way to help out is SPEADING THE WORD WHENEVER AND WHEREVER POSSIBLE!
Show Shantae and her games to people on forums and other sites you're registered.
With a little luck they might get interested in it and we can say hello to new fans.

Of course there are also other ways.
For example: I was thinking about making a fan-game, which is a crossover fighting games with Shantae in it.
And I figured if the fan-game is well made, including Shantae within a cast of really popular characters would be a great way to make her more popular.

You can also make Plushies or other merchandise and stuff.
Though this and other ways might require some money.

Like buying a spot for an event (like Comic Con or something) and selling stuff there.
(100.000 Strong did that, if I am not mistaken.)

Of course, those are just some examples.
Be creative and think about what else you could do to help.
The possibilities are (pretty much) endless!

Ultimately it's everyone's own decision if he or she wants to support these efforts and how far they want to go with the support.

Just remember that if we just stick together, with each of us doing our bit for great justice, we can make Shantae a really popular character.

With a little luck, maybe she can get back into the retail-sector.
And maybe her games can FINALLY make it into Japan?
And maybe we can even make her so popular that she can compete with other well-known characters such as Mario, Sonic and other characters?

Well, anything is possible. That's for sure.

Just read the first line I posted in this description and take it in.
It's just so true. (At least I think that)

Another quote I can post is: Together we are Strong!
And yet another line I can only agree with.

So, I hope I got the message across.
And I pray that more Shantae-fans will actually try and fight with us for Shantae.
Let us all do something about this poor girl.

EXTEND THE HELPING HAND! And help the Half-Genie to rise from the depths of oblivion and go to the light.

A solidary community that sticks together can move mountains.
NEVER forget this!

Oh and one more thing.
Here is a site that is currently under construction.
But I thought I might advertise for it a little.
[link]

You can also try and contact them via the shown E-Mail Address.
I am sure they will love it and boost their motivation to get this site up and running. :)

And I think this is all.
See you soon! :D

Shantae deserves to be popular just by her mere appearance. If the FedEx guy encouraged us to buy products, Shantae's sexiness should have brought gamers in to play her adventures.

It's interesting that some artworks of her look like they were drawn by Japanese game designers and anime artists, but it's a real shame that Shantae didn't make it big in Japan. After all, Thomas the Tank Engine and Pokémon are such a big deal in that country, so why can't they have some hard-to-beat competition with Shantae around? Someday, I hope they make a Shantae anime since some promotional artwork looks so much like it.

Listen to me on this: I support every single word you said with a fiery passion. Geez, and I thought Rouge the Bat was hot.... =(

[as Bullhorn]: Good sir, I agree with your statement all the way. She needs an American anime. In the style of Boondocks or Avatar, on TV or the Web, she'll definitely go far!

[normal voice]: In all seriousness, Half Genie Hero is coming to all the next-gen consoles. I just pray it's not a downloadable title...

[response to Bullhorn]: Well, I really want Shantae to have an appeal to Japanese audiences. As long as this American anime is broadcast in Japan with a Japanese dub, I'm okay with it. As far as I am aware, Teen Titans is an anime-styled show and has a Japanese dub as well; there's a video by KyruiiLuvsKyo on YouTube that has Teen Titans dubbed in Japanese. =)

[response to normal voice]: They managed to get DuckTales Remastered released as a physical copy in addition to having it be downloadable, so there's no reason why Half-Genie Hero can't do the same thing.... AS LONG AS IT HAS A F***ING JAPANESE RELEASE, OF COURSE!!!!!!

............Sorry about that. One of my major gripes with the Shantae series. =(

The message is something so simple and universal that sadly not many people take heed to. :/ I admit that Shantae dos deserve more credit than given, though! The rant was very well though out.

I agree with the people commenting on Brawl somewhat, though there could be problems getting her well noticed enough for Nintendo to even consider...I think if she did get included, though, it would certainly boost her popularity! ^^

Now onto the drawing itself... I like the message behind it, and again I must admit your skills are getting better with each picture. :) Keep it up!

I know many people underestimate themselves.
Which is why I hope to reach as many people as possible with this.

Just like I said.
We'd need to expand the fanbase first, if we want to give her good chances.
Of course, it'd love her to be in. <3

Exactly. After all, you can't skip the first step in expanding/growing in terms of popularity.

No prob, by the way!

Making a Shantae fan game is something i've always wanted to do but there are two problems that stand in my way:
1. I'm only LEARNING how to make games yet.
2. I'm afraid that if i came up with a game idea it wouldn't turn out so good and it would turn people away from Shantae instead of towards her.

Yeah. Making high-quality games requires TONS AND TONS of work.
MUCH more than you might think right now. Even if you already think of much work, it'd probably be a lot more than that.

The thing is though, I too was thinking about a Shantae Fan-Game once.
It involves my Shantae OC (uploaded a drawing of her some time ago).
And I think I have a good plot and stuff.
But yeah, finding people and make the game is the actual challenge.

I couldn't find people for my own project so far.
Looks like it's very hard to convince people. >.<
But oh well...

I think the single best thing that could happen for Shantae's popularity is if she gets included in the next Smash Bros game. It's a long shot, but it's also well within the realm of possibility (paradoxdoxdox). It was enough to introduce Fire Emblem to North America, and a lot of people wanted to look into Earthbound when Ness first showed up. An attractive female suddenly showing up on the scene? You bet people would be curious about where she came from.

Far as I know, WayForward absolutely loved Brickroad's LP of the original Shantae. That LP was actually my test to see if I would like the series enough to buy Risky's Revenge (which, probably obvious, I eventually did). A nice LP of Risky's Revenge certainly couldn't hurt anything. I wanted to do one myself, but I don't have anything good for recording a 3DS game, and I'm not jailbreaking my iPhone. I may get a good one off eventually (assuming no one beats me to it), I just need more tools to record it first.

If you're looking to support WayForward as a whole, an easy way would always be to buy their non-Shantae games. They'd probably like that more than a hand-out anyway! And, don't bother buying the original used unless you REALLY like having a physical copy of the game--the $200 goes to whoever owned the game and sold it to you; none of it goes to WayForward. As long as they're not selling it directly, there's no harm in playing a rom just to experience the game--if you know more about it, you have more to gush about, after all!

My own personal world of online community is rather small (which is sort of how I prefer things), so starting a discussion thread for it in my favorite forum is all I can do for now without sacrificing my favorite avatar and limited signature space. I do love the series and the company behind it, though, so I'd be happy to see them get any positive attention they can.

True that.

But the problem is that all the obscure franchises are from Nintendo's side.
And since they made the game, they are free to choose which of their franchises to use.
When it comes to third-parties however, it seems they only care about big names.
Sonic from SEGA (who, quite interestingly, wasn't even supposed to be included originally) and Snake from Konami.
And it appears that CAPCOM characters have a chance to get in next.

But of course, I am all for Shantae to be in a Smash Bros name.
I am just saying that at the moment, chances are not high for her.
But I am certain that we can do something about that. ;)

Well, I got interested in her through cubex's Longplay of Shantae.
I am not a big fan of commentaries, since IMO most voices sound horrible.
(Yes, I know I sound like a jerk. But if the voices are not proper, it puts me off. Sorry...)
But yeah, otherwise, GO FOR IT!

Nuts. :(
I really would've liked if WayForward would get the money.
Curse my non-existant knowledge about business.
:iconhomerdohplz:

As for buying their other games: The problem is, I CAN'T!
I live in germany, so I can't get the retail-games AND I lack WLAN, so I have no way of buying stuff from the e-Shop.
(Why the frakk doesn't Nintendo allow good ol cord-connections?!?)
Talk about a dilemma... >.<

Personally I think it would have made more sense to recreate that last scene in the first Shantae, but those hands are attention-grabbing nonetheless. =-P *bricked*

Although, yeah, the fans could do a lot more to flaunt their love for Shantae almost without even trying, like the use Shantae-related avatars on message boards, starting topics, plastering adverts for the iPhone/3DS/DSi title Risky's Revenge in signatures. Even stuff like that would get people's attention, so as long as it's not over-hyped, of course. Let's spread that love all over the internet people, and get people talking and interested! :3 Heck, half of what I found about Shantae initially came from Racketboy's review site and fan art here on dA; I barely needed that to wet my appetite. xD (Not in a dirty way, mind you!)

...also, wait, used copies of the original Shantae are running for $200 average? Holy **** it's no wonder people want it on the virtual console so badly! That's why I cannot stand game collectors, it makes me want to write a rant about it! :iconrageguyplz:

Yup, I can only agree with that.
Though it can't hurt to do more than that, as long as it's done properly.
Might require more effort (and in some cases money as well), but it can have a much greater effect.

Though we need people to realize that. Which is why I made this.

Tbh, as long as WayForward gets the money, I'd gladly buy this game.
I mean seriously, I'd rather give WayForward more money than companies like Capcom.
Heck, WayForward is the kind of company I'd gladly donate some money to, if I had the ability to do so.

I guess the real reason for most people to want the original Shantae for 3DS, is to finally get the game.
Since it's so damn rare!

I totally forgot about that scene, actually. xD I was referring to the scene before Shantae is teleported to Gimmick's dock, where she turns down her one chance to become a full genie.

"Though it can't hurt to do more than that, as long as it's done properly."

True, it wouldn't hurt to go the extra mile, if it's within someone's means to do so! Quality fan art, custom figurines/dolls, or even 3D custom character skins for ioquake3-based games do wonders to promote obscure video game characters too. Heck, I'd do that! 8-D

"Tbh, as long as WayForward gets the money, I'd gladly buy this game."

You made a great point, but it's too bad they don't get a cent from the used game sales or auctions. It all goes straight into the collector's pocket, which really pisses me off, personally. If their copy is still sealed or in near mint-condition, and the game itself had a slim print-run, it might be justifiable, but otherwise the illogical price-tag is a terrible way to punish an audience who just want to experience a last-gen title they missed out on. All the more reason to look forward to low-priced re-releases on alternative platforms and remakes. ^^

Though I still wanted the drawing to show helping hands (aka the FANS) leading Shantae from oblivion to the light.
Representing the Power of Unity and the great powers/miracles it can do.
And I think I've accomplished that.

"Quite ironic that I have no means at all to give them money though."

All the more reason to get Shantae into retail again. She would immediately become more accessible to people without decent internet connections or wireless routers. (I really don't see why there isn't an Ethernet adapter for the 3DS or DSi.) And it's not like kids or pre-teens interested in buying Risky's Revenge online for their systems have Paypal accounts either. While developers profit less from physical copies as opposed to digital, the convenience of cartridges to the consumer is worth the cost of distribution, and if sales go through the roof, everyone involved walks away happy.

Right now she doesn't have a lot of chances to be in.
But who knows what the future brings?
Maybe if we can make her popular enough, she will end up in a Smash Bros game in the end.
